Three failure modes account for almost every Adelaide rug we recover. The first is sand abrasion — homes within five kilometres of the coast pick up enough fine silica from foot traffic that a wool rug's pile fibres are mechanically cut from below. You can vacuum daily and still lose pile depth because the abrasion is happening inside the rug, not on top of it. The second is colour-bleed from hard water, a particular issue on Adelaide's older mains supply and on bore-fed properties through the northern and western metro. Persian and Kashan dyes can bleed within minutes of immersion if pH isn't controlled. The third is fringe destruction, almost always caused by harsh rotary cleaning on a rug that should have been hand-treated. We deal with each differently. Sand-affected rugs go into an immersion bath that lifts the grit before any agitation. Hard-water rugs are washed in pH-balanced soft water — we don't use mains supply on heritage pieces. And fringes are restored by hand: brushed straight, trimmed only where damage is structural, and re-tasselled where the homeowner is willing to pay for it. Hardy synthetic rugs and modern machine-made wool rugs are usually fine with on-site hot water extraction, which we can complete in your home in 1–2 hours with no pickup required. Delicate, valuable, and dye-sensitive rugs — Persian, Turkish, silk, viscose, and fringed antique pieces — are better handled by our off-site immersion wash facility. Off-site cleaning uses pH-balanced, fibre-specific solutions, full submersion, multiple fresh water rinses, and temperature-controlled flat drying to prevent shrinkage, dye bleeding, and fibre distortion. The single biggest killer of Persian and wool rugs is untreated pet urine — the acids break down fibres permanently if left for more than a few weeks. Our enzyme immersion process neutralises uric acid crystals at the knot level and restores both colour and smell. Dingy, yellowed, or grey fringes are one of the most obvious signs of an unloved rug — and often the reason people retire pieces that are otherwise fine. We hand-clean fringes separately using a gentle oxidising treatment that restores the original white without bleaching the main pile. We also offer edge binding repair for rugs where the overcast stitching has started to unravel, which prevents further damage and extends the rug's life by years.
